残墨dern Calligraphy

残墨, pronounced "can2 mo4", refers to leftover ink, as inspired by the phrase 剩饭残羹 (which refers to meager leftover rice and soup taken as another meal).

Works from the 残墨dern series were created from the leftover ink from my classical calligraphy practices that had dried and formed ink crystals.

Chinese calligraphy works are usually of elegant brushwork, composing ancient poems or phrases reflective of the classical tradition and spirit... but what of modern contemporary ones?

These calligraphic experiments combine techniques like "blow ink" and "drip ink" and the western "accidental drip" to reconstruct Chinese characters and reflect new interpretation.

鬦 pronounced "dou4" literally means to rival. The simplified character is 斗.

口是心非 (kou3 shi4 xin1 fei1) refers to when the heart says things that the heart does not mean. They are arranged to denote the word "悲" which means "sadness" or "tragedy".

江雪

《江雪》是唐代诗人柳宗元的一首诗.

江雪 (jiang1 xue3) is the name of a poem of by Liu Zong Yuan, from the Tang Dynasty. On the surface, the poem describes the scene of a man fishing alone at a river that has frozen over, but the poem is taken to be an analogy of the poet's sentiments about his political career.

雪中炭 literally means charcoal in the snow. To receive or deliver charcoal in the snow, is to receive or deliver much needed timely assistance. The character are pronounced as "xue3 zhong1 tan4".

《温顺怪人》 is a literal translation of "meekfreak" which is a handle that I had been using since my teens. It is pronounced as "wen1 shun4 guai4 ren2".
